YOW!

YOW!

YEE-OWWWWWW!

“What was that, Mr. Quick?”

“It sounded like an owl to me.”

“Owls hoot, sir.”

“Do they? I thought they went Yow!”

YEEEEEE-OWWWWW!

“Hurry along,” said Mr. Quick as we went down the stairs of the building. “That’s just an owl up on the roof.”

“That’s not an owl, sir. That’s Angel screaming.”

“She has this fear of heights, you know. That’s very difficult to cure.”

“She’s being punished, sir.”

Mr. Quick laughed. “Now I’ll tell one,” he said.

“I should help her! I should rescue her!”

“I think Top Freak got your ear, did he?”

“No,” I said, for fear I would get Mr. Pye into worse trouble than he was already in.

“That ‘rescue her’ stuff is straight from the mouth of Top Freak, so don’t try to fool me, Chester.” He paused a moment and then added, “Son.”

“Why does Miss Wheelspinner hate Angel so much?” I asked.

“You know, Son, Angel likes to get attention. If you ask me, she’s not at all afraid of heights. She just likes everyone to notice her … I suppose Top Freak told you that fib, too: that Maude doesn’t like her own niece.”

“No. He didn’t tell me anything. He didn’t have to. I have ears and eyes. Anyone can see it.”

“He’s a very clever fellow, Top Freak is. I talked to him one day and we had quite a conversation. It’s possible to forget completely that he s-l-e-e-p-s, and dreams, I might add, though he said his dreams were of night horses, so he tried to s-l-e-e-p in the daytime.”

“Nightmares,” I said.

“Yes, that’s what he said. Apparently where he comes from there are horses for the day and horses for the night. It must be a very slack place: even the horses can’t go night and day.”

We walked out the front door of The Sideshow and stood on the steps. In the distance, towering over all of Lake Lot, stood The Star Reacher.

Mr. Quick looked up at it as I did.

“I could certainly use a slide and a swim,” he said, “Could you?” Then he added, “Son?”

“Yes, sir,” I said.

YOW! YOW! UMM UMM from above us, as though in the midst of Angel’s cries, someone had stifled them.

“Poor Angel,” I said.

“She’s anything but poor,” said Mr. Quick. “She and her father are heir to Maud Wheelspinner’s fortune. If I were heir to such a fortune, I would be a little more considerate toward my benefactor, but nooooo, not Angel. She treats Maud like dirt.”

“I would say it’s the other way around.”

“Maud has the money,” Mr. Quick shrugged.

“Don’t people who have money have to be considerate, too?”

“Not really. People will love them whether or not they’re considerate. Which reminds me, Chester. I have an errand to do before we swim. I want to buy some perfume for Angel’s aunt, to thank her for asking us here.”

“Isn’t The Sideshow open to all the public?”

“It is. But it’s seldom that the Top Curator invites people personally, so I may step down the street and get her a bottle of Lively.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Why don’t you run along and play
